The Deity of Messiah Yeshua

A teaching by Messianic Rabbi Hylan Slobodkin

Intro

II Corinthians 11:4  “another Yeshua”, “a different Spirit”, “a different gospel”
I John 4:1-6  “By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”
Acts 20:28-31  “the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

“The throne of God and of the Lamb”

Revelation 3:21; 4:2; 4:8; 5:6 and 7:17; 5:13; 7:9-10

Revelation 22:1 – the throne of God and of the Lamb

Revelation 22:3-4 and 14:1 – serve Him, see His face, His name… all regarded as one being

1. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” – John 1

Psalm 107:19-20

Isaiah 55:10-11

Psalm 147:15-18

This is how God reveals Himself.

The most common Hebrew expression for “word” is דבר / davar = word, thing, physical matter.  Because there is content and reality, substance, to one’s “words.”

Memra = “the Word” in Aramaic – in Rabbinic thought, since God was perceived as untouchable, it was necessary to provide some kind of a link between the LORD and His earthly creation.  Memra is found hundreds of times in the Aramaic Targums (the translations and paraphrases of the Hebrew Scriptures used in synagogues for centuries around the time of Yeshua).

Genesis 3:8 Torah “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden.
Targum“And they heard the sound of the Word of the LORD God walking in the garden.”
Genesis 28:20-21 Torah“If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.”
Targum“If the Word of the LORD will be with me… then the Word of the LORD will be my God.”

The Word of the LORD will be Jacob’s God!  [There are hundreds of examples]

John 1:1-4, 14

John 1:1-4, 14 is actually saying this Word, davar, memra, logos, actually became flesh and made His dwelling among us.  “If John simply wrote, ‘God became a human being,’ that would have given a false impression, leading one to think that the LORD was no longer filling the universe or reigning in heaven.  Instead, John tells us that it was the divine Word [which spoke the world into existence] that became a human being, and through the Word we know God personally.” (Jewish Objections, Brown, p.22)

Revelation 19:13

Revelation 19:13 says He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

Dwelling among them

John 1:14 “dwelt among us” = “lived in a tent” - Sukkot
Exodus 25:8“Then have them make a sanctuary for Me, and I will dwell among them.”
II Chronicles 6:1-2 “The LORD has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud.  I have built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.”

The Septuagint (LXX) translated the words “dwell” with the Greek verb “to pitch a tent”, same as in John 1:14.  So, God remained in heaven and filled the universe with His presence, yet pitched His tent / dwelt among us through the Tabernacle, the Temple, and through His Son, Yeshua.  The glory of God filled them all.  (see Exodus 40:34-35; II Chronicles 7:1-2; John 1:14; II Chronicles 4:6)

Hebrews 1:1-3

1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,

2 in these last days has spoken to us in a Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Colossians 1:15-19; 2:9

15 And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation.

16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created by Him and for Him.

17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

18 He is also head of the body, the community [of God]; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything.

19 For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,

9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.

John 1:18

18 No man has ever seen God. The only begotten God (some later manuscripts read “Son”), who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known.

John 14:7-9

7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him."

8 Philip * said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us."

9 Yeshua * said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, 'Show us the Father'?

Yeshua is “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being.”  When we see Yeshua, we see God.  He is the mirror of the Father’s image.  Yeshua is the Word come in the flesh.  He who has seen the Son has seen the Father.

2. Theophany – A manifestation of God in human form

Exodus 33:20

"You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!"

Exodus 24:9-11

9 Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel,

10 and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself.

11 Yet He did not stretch out His hand against the nobles of the sons of Israel; and they saw God, and they ate and drank.

Exodus 3:1-6

1 Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

2 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.

3 So Moses said, "I must turn aside now, and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up."

4 When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush, and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."

5 Then He said, "Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."

6 He said also, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

The Targums tried to deal with this apparent paradox by re-translating the Hebrew.  Targum Onkelos reads in verse 6 that Moses “was afraid to look beside the glory of the LORD.”  And Targum Pseudo-Jonathan says that Moses was afraid to look at “the glory of the Shekinah of the LORD.”  Both are side-stepping the clear reading of the scripture.

The text completely intertwines the angel of the LORD with the LORD Himself.  It seems that God was somehow “in” this angel and that seeing the angel was equated with seeing God.

Exodus 13:21

21 And the LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.

Exodus 14:19

19 And the angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.

These are examples of how the infinite, invisible God can interact with finite, earthly people.  Other examples are:

Genesis 16Hagar “The angel of the LORD said to her.”  “Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, ‘You are a God who sees.’”
Genesis 18Abraham Three men, two angels and יהוה, “the Judge of all the earth.”  All three appeared as human beings.  Did God have dusty feet and sit down to eat a meal?  Yet all the while He remained God in heaven. The two men went on to Sodom, while the LORD remained with Abraham.  Abraham and Sarah talked with the LORD.
Genesis 32Jacob Jacob wrestled with a man (Hosea 12:4 says it was an angel), yet     Jacob says, “I have seen God face-to-face.”
Judges 13Manoah and his wifeThe angel of the LORD appeared to the woman.”  She said, “A man of God came to me and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome.”  This being is later called “the man of God” and then “The angel of God.”  But Manoah said to his wife, “…we have seen God.”

These verses clearly teach that God can come to earth in human form for a period of time if He so desires.  These were theophanies, a manifestation of God in the flesh to man.  And when the fullness of time had come, they saw the Son.  This is called the incarnation.

They saw the Son!

Col 1:15And He is the image of the invisible God.
John 1:18  No man has ever seen God.  The only begotten God (or Son), who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known.
Hebrews 1:3He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature.
John 14:9 He who has seen Me has seen the Father.

John 10:27- 30

27   "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
28   and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
29   My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
30   I and the Father are one."  (a compound unity)

38   “… the Father is in Me, and I in the Father."

Yeshua explains how someone could actually see God even though God cannot be seen.  He explains how God remained the LORD in heaven while also appearing as the LORD on earth.  Yeshua is the visible representation of the invisible, the living manifestation of the glory of God.

II Corin 4:6

For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Messiah.

As one rabbi once said, “Yeshua was like a walking Shekinah.”

John 20:28

Thomas… said to Him, "My Lord (kurios) and my God (theos)!"  If Thomas was in error on such an important declaration, would not Yeshua have corrected him?

Seeing Yeshua is seeing God.  Col 2:9  “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.”  Yeshua is the God-man, the incarnate God come in the flesh.

Isaiah 7:14

14 "Therefore the LORD Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.  (also see Matthew 1:19-25 and Luke 1:26-38)

God revealed Himself in and through a man.  He temporarily pitched His tent among us.  His fullness dwelt in a virgin-born human.  (See again John 1:18)

3. Son of God

Son =

  1. a literal offspring
  2. a metaphorical offspring, as “sons of the prophets”
  3. King of Israel, a son by divine adoption.
II Samuel 7:14 - “I will be his father, and he will be my son.”
  4. The people, or nation, of Israel as a whole.
Exodus 4:22-23 - “This is what the LORD says, Israel is my firstborn son.”  “Let my son go, so he may worship Me.”
  5. Individual Israelites
Hosea 1:10 – “The will be called sons of the living God.”
  6. Angels are sometimes called b’nai Elohim,  “sons of God,” because they have a heavenly, spirit nature as opposed to the earthly, fleshly nature of humans.

Therefore, “sons of God” can refer to individuals, the nation, kings and angels.

Psalm 2:7

[the LORD said to me] “You are My son. Today I have begotten you.”

“Begotten you / given birth to you / fathered you”.  Was David’s some kind of divine begetting?

“According to the Hebrew Bible, the Davidic king was called God’s son and firstborn, and he was described as begotten by God.  He was to be praised, extolled, served and adored.  But what if this is speaking prophetically of the Messiah?  How much more could this be said of the supreme Davidic king, the Messiah, the ultimate ‘Son of God’?”  (Jewish Objections, page 41)

Psalm 110:1

The LORD יהוה says to my lord אדני, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’”

This is clarified by Yeshua.

Matthew 22:41-46

41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Yeshua asked them a question:

42 "What do you think about the Messiah, whose son is He?" They said to Him, "The son of David."

43 He said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying,

44 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'?

45 "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?"

46 No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.

Matthew 9:27

27 As Yeshua went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"

Daniel 7:13-14

13 "I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him.

14 "And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and men of every language might worship and serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed.”

There were a number of great Davidic kings who would have been called “God’s son”, but none of them ever sat down at God’s right hand, nor were they worshipped and adored by people of every nation and tongue.

Only Yeshua, who called Himself both “Son of God” and “Son of man”, fits this description.  All nations shall worship Him (Revelation 5).

Psalm 2:6-7, 11-12

6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain."

7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee.

11 Worship the LORD with reverence, And rejoice with trembling.

12 Worship the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Isaiah 9:6-7

6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

אבי עד / avi ad = Father Forever.  How can this son be a father?  We know this is not speaking of an earthly father because he is forever.

אל גבור / el gibor = Mighty God.  This is a title reserved for God alone, the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, the LORD God of hosts.  (see Isaiah 10:20-23)

The truth is, no Davidic king could bring to reality the full meaning of these words except Yeshua the Messiah.  He explains how the Davidic king could be human and yet more than human, David’s son and yet David’s lord, both son of God and Son of God.  The New Covenant doctrine of the Son of God is the culmination of the dreams of Israel’s prophets and psalmists, the fulfillment of the Tanach.

The Virgin birthalmah or betulah?

The virgin birth explains how the eternal Son of God could enter our world as a “divine human.”  His origins were both earthly and heavenly.

Luke 1:35

And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God.”

Proverbs 30:4

Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know!

I John 4:15; 5:5, 13

“Whoever confesses that Yeshua is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

And who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Yeshua is the Son of God?”

13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.

John 20:31

31 but these have been written that you may believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

Mark 3:11
11   Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are the Son of God!"

Matthew 26:63-66

63 And the high priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Messiah, the Son of God."

64 Yeshua said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

Romans 1:3-4

3concerning His [God’s] Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,

4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Yeshua the Messiah, our Lord.

Yeshua was sentenced to death because He admitted He was the Messiah, the Son of God.  He rose from the dead to prove He is the Son of God.

4. The Judge of all the earth

Genesis 18:25-26

25 "Far be it from Thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from Thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?"

26 So the LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account."

Romans 14:10

“…we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.”

II Corin 5:10

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Messiah, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

John 5:22-23, 27

22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,

23 in order that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.”

Acts 10:38, 42-43

38 "You know of Yeshua of Nazareth…

42 "And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.

43 "Of Him all the prophets bear witness."

II Timothy 4:1

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Messiah Yeshua, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom.”

5. They picked up stones to throw at Him.  Why?

II Peter 1:1

Titus 1:3-4; 2:13; 3:4-6

3 but at the proper time manifested His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior;

4 … Grace and peace from God the Father and Messiah Yeshua our Savior.

13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Messiah Yeshua;

4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared,

5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Yeshua the Messiah, our Savior.

9. Yeshua is the Shepherd

Isaiah 44:6

"Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: 'I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.”

Rev 1:8, 17; 22:13 – Yeshua says,

8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as a dead man. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,

13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

Matthew 2:2

"Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east, and have come to worship Him."

Isaiah 49:26

"And I will feed your oppressors with their own flesh, And they will become drunk with their own blood as with sweet wine; And all flesh will know that I, the LORD יהוה, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob."

Romans 3:23-24

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Messiah Yeshua.

Colossians 1:13-14

13 For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

13. The throne of God and of the Lamb

Revelation 3:21; 4:2; 5:6, 13; 7:9-10, 17; 22:1-4  (similar to intro scriptures)

Rev 22:1, 3-4

1 And he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

3 And there shall no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His bond-servants shall serve Him;

4 and they shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.

This scripture does not make a distinction between God and the Lamb.  They occupy the same throne.  They are one and the same, as “His bond-servants shall serve Him,” they will “see His face,” and “His name” will be their calling card, as it were, “on their foreheads.”  (Note: v’ahavta, Deut 6:8)

14. אחד Echad = one, a compound unity, one alone

Deut 6:4

“Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!”

Genesis 2:24

For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.”

II Samuel 7:23

"And what one nation on the earth is like Thy people Israel.”

15. The Tanach allows for God’s plurality or diversity within His unity

Genesis 1:1

“In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:26

“Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.”

Genesis 3:22

Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us.”

Genesis 11:17

"Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."

Isaiah 6:8

Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’"

“In the Ancient Near East, it was common to refer to deity in the compound plural, and when speaking of an owner or master, it was often the rule to speak of him in such terms.  Compound plurals were often used to speak of leaders, owners, masters or kings.  How much more then could similar expressions be used to speak of the LORD, the Master, the King and the God.”  (Jewish Objections, page 9)

Some concluding scriptures

Mark 2:1-12

1 And when He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home.

2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.

3 And they * came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men.

4 And being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying.

5 And Yeshua seeing their faith * said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven."

6 But there were some of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,

7 "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?"

8 And immediately Yeshua, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, * said to them, "Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?

9 "Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven'; or to say, 'Arise, and take up your pallet and walk'?

10 "But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--He * said to the paralytic--

11 "I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home."

12 And he rose and immediately took up the pallet and went out in the sight of all; so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this."

John 8:58

56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."

57 The Jews therefore said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"

58 Yeshua said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him; but Yeshua hid Himself, and went out of the temple.

Romans 9:3-5

3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Messiah for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh,

4 who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Torah and the temple service and the promises,

5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Messiah according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Micah 5:2

" But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrata, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel.  His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity, from everlasting to everlasting."

Acts 9:3-6 – Whose voice did Shaul hear?

3 And it came about that as he journeyed, he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him;

4 and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Shaul, Shaul, why are you persecuting Me?"

5 And he said, "Who are You, LORD?" And He said, "I am Yeshua whom you are persecuting,

6 but rise, and enter the city, and it shall be told you what you must do."

Zechariah 12:10

I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.

I Timothy 3:16

May God grant you wisdom as you search the Scriptures for truth. The Father is seeking true worshippers, who worship Him in Spirit and in truth.  (John 4:23)
