NEWCASTLE – In a traditional Jewish ceremony the congregation of Beit Tikvah carefully carried one of the synagogue's most prized possessions, a Torah, to its new home.

The new synagogue holds special significance to the congregation because it will house a new Torah.

It has been a long road to get it there.

Last February, someone pried open the door of the old synagogue. All that was taken was the congregation's Torah, a set of scrolls that is used during services.

“It just broke our hearts that someone would come and take something that was so dear to us,” says Armando Rivas of the Beit Tikvah congregation.

The stolen Torah was eventually replaced and soon after, the congregation bought five acres in Newcastle.

“It's new name a new home, a new location, lot of new things taking place and we are really excited to be here and moving into the next phase of what God has for us as a congregation,” says Messianic Rabbi Hylan Slobodkin.

The new name of the congregation is Beit Tikvah. In Hebrew it means “house of hope.” The people who worship here say the name is appropriate since it was hope and prayer that brought them here.

Police still have no suspects in the theft of the Torah.
